Video inclined in fullscreen

I have a problem with my MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015) since macOS 10.13.4 update. When playing a video in fullscreen, it shows inclined, like two pieces side by side. It happens in iTunes (not in QuickTime X) and Safari. There's no problem when an object overlays the video, like scrolling tool at the bottom, subtitles or system sound level. In YouTube in Safari, the same thing happen. Videos play correctly when an icon appears in the right corner or options at the bottom. The same videos play well in Chrome and Firefox (maybe Chrome and Firefox don't use h.264 videos).

This is a picture of my screen. I added a red line where the video is cut in half. Is it a known issue?

Same problem here on MacBook Air 11'' running High Sierra 10.13.6.

Workaround for me was to change display resolution to 1280x720.

Fullscreen video (iTunes/Netflix/Youtube) back to normal after change.

Hope it works for others.

Hello Jasmin,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that you are experiencing some issues when playing videos in full screen on your MacBook Air. I would be happy to help provide some steps to take from here.

Let's start by seeing if you can replicate this behavior while in safe mode:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

If your display works only when your Mac is started in safe mode, and you have display-related software installed, check with the software's developer for updates, or try temporarily uninstalling it. The NVRAM (nonvolatile random-access memory) stores settings for your MacBook Air, including display resolution. If your video does not play properly in full screen while in safe mode, reset your NVRAM following the steps here:

How to reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Testing the issue in another user is also helpful to isolating possible settings or software related causes:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support

Keep us posted with what happens from here.

Cheers!

Hi Jasmin,

Thanks for following up to let us know what happened after trying those steps. At this point it would be a good idea to make a backup of the data on your MacBook Air, then reinstall the macOS.

To view different ways you can backup your data, check out:

How to back up your Mac - Official Apple Support

When you're ready to reinstall the macOS software, follow the steps here:

How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support

Let us know if you are still experiencing the behavior after trying those steps.

Take care!

Thanks for advices.

I restarted in safe mode, but iTunes can't play videos in safe mode. I checked with Safari, no problem there.

After a restart, problem happens again. NVRAM reset did not resolve anything. I created another user account, same problem again. I also deleted my login items (iTunesHelper, Dropbox, Alfred 3) and it changed nothing.

I tried others things. There is no problem with SD videos (480p and less), only HD videos are inclined in iTunes and Safari (720p, 1080p). In safe mode, all resolutions play well in YouTune with Safari.

It seems I need to restore.

Yes, same issue. Started with 10.13.4 on my MBA 11 (early 2015). Fullscreen video distorts both on websites as well as in QT. I think it's a bug in High Sierra, perhaps unique to MBA. It persists despite NVRAM reset, MacOS reinstall. Interestingly, while distorted, if you move the cursor around, it corrects momentarily.

Has been widely reported, but no fix in the works. Until then, avoid fullscreen (enlarge window as far as you can w/o going to fullscreen).

Hey guys, I run a 1-to-1 program at a high school with MacBooks. They are all 2015 11" macs. We just started school this year and by the second day, I've already had 4 students come back to me with this problem. These are all freshly installed Macs with nothing except JAMF, Sophos, Chrome and MS Office software installed. Seems to me that it's a bug in High Sierra. I'd like to be proven otherwise, but I couldn't isolate the problem to anything we've installed (I've also seen a huge bug where all the Icons are disappearing. much larger problem but that's for another thread).

Just thought I'd take a moment to tell everyone and hope it helps.

Just updated to MacOS 10.14 Mojave.

Changed my display setting back to "Default for display". (I had picked a lower res as a work-around)

Played a Youtube video in full screen - All Good. (in the past would have looked wonky after 10 seconds or so).

Played a iTunes movie in full screen - All Good.

FOR ME...it's working like it should now!
