Well, I started the trial yesterday and straight away received an invoice. I should have got one after 3 months as it was a free 3 month trial.

Frankly, I don't remember if I have taken a free trial in the past. I just got an email from apple for a free trial because I bought a new phone and I signed up for it. Probably they charged me because I must have taken these few years back.

However, I subscribed this time thinking that it was free for me and received an invoice and therefore canceled that subscription right away (within a couple of hours ). Is there a way to get the refund in this case? I really don't want to spend 16.49 dollars for a service that I would hardly use.

Typically free trials set up an auto-renewing subscription which you need to manually revoke before it is first called on if you don't want to continue with the subscription at the end of the trial. See View, change, or cancel your subscriptions - Apple Support for details. You can cancel the subscription and potentially request a refund via https://reportaproblem.apple.com/ for the most recent payment that was taken, particularly if you can argue that you haven't made any use of the service.

If you'd previously subscribed to Apple Music, for example, then you don't get another free trial even if iTunes appears to offer it to you. If that's not the issue then see About payment card authorization holds in the iTunes Store - Apple Support. There may have been an authorization hold for the value of your subscription to check that you're good for the money should you still be subscribed at the point where you would first be charged.
