What does "Exclude these items from backup" mean in Time Machine.

I had set Time Machine to back up to 3 disks A, B and C. After 3 months I've replaced A with D . I deleted the plist so it will all reset.

Time Machine options asks now "Exclude these items from backup"?

It is showing B and C greyed out so they can not be de-selected.

The only disk that can be deselected is called "Media" containing all photos, music, videos etc..... It is the whole purpose of making a backup.

What should I do? 😕

Does "Exclude this item from backup" mean that this item will not be backed up, or does it mean this item will be used as a backup disk?

thank you in advance!

Time Machine automatically excludes any internally or externally connected back up disk from being backed up, so B&C, being backup disks are not included to be backed up.

Are you rotating Time Machine backups across all three disks? Wise to have more than one backup but you might consider reducing the rotation to two disks and using the third to make a bootable clone of your system. Another thing to think about having three backups is taking one of them off site. If something happened to your home/office you could lose your system and all of it’s backups at once. Removing one of them significantly reduces the chances of that.
