How to stop calculator widget in High Sierra resetting to zero after closing the notification center

Calculator widget in High Sierra resets to zero after closing the notification center. This makes the widget unusable to me as I often need to switch between apps to see numbers to do calculations which auto-close the notification center and clear out my calculation. Is there a way to revert back to how it was before?
