I want to start up my iMac in Recovery mode and to do so I have to hold down Command + R. I am using a wireless keyboard and at this stage of the start-up the Bluetooth connection is not working. How do I initiate the start-up in this mode?
If the wireless keyboard isn't working then use a wired one. BT is active on startup so the keyboard should connect unless it needs charging or has never been paired with the computer.

Presumably Command + R should be held down immediately the start-up process begins. Do you mean that BT is working at this early stage?
Yes, but only if the keyboard is already paired. It works immediately at startup otherwise the keyboard would be useless.
