Question:

Question: apple diagnostic d not working on 2016 15" mbp

While holding D then restart, Apple Diagnostic will not show up. I even shut it down and still nothing. On macOs 10.13.4

Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold the D key on your keyboard. Keep holding the D key until you see the Apple Hardware Test icon:

If that still does not work for you, if it's convenient, take your Mac to an Apple Store. You can make an appointment in advance at the Apple Store Genius Bar.

Perhaps try an external keyboard connected via USB.


While troubleshooting my 2016 MBP with an unrelated issue, my keyboard stopped responding. I could only manage to initiate Apple Diagnostics by attaching an Apple Keyboard via USB and holding 'D' on the external keyboard as the MBP started up.

Perhaps try an SMC reset first. Sometimes the SMC settings get kind of wonky and needs a reset. Of course if the keyboard settings are messed up because of the SMC, it's kind of a chicken or egg issue.
