No place to put verification code?

I am currently trying to put in my apple ID code and password into my mac. When I press enter it comes up with a notice saying,"An apple ID verification code is required to sign in. Type your password followed by the verification code shown on your other devices." I have received the code on my phone but there is nowhere to input it on my mac. I have tried multiple times but it still isn't working. Where do I put the code and how do I get it to come up?
