Use Bose powered computer speakers with iMac headphone jack

I have a new iMac 27", 3.5 GHz, 8MB, 1TB. I have a pair of powered Bose PC speakers that work like a champ with the speaker output of my Dell PC. I am migrating to my iMac and connected my speakers to the headphone jack. The speakers sounded terrible; weak and tinny. Should they work with the headphone jack? If not, is there an adapter that would make them work? If not, what are my options for external speakers?

Thanks,

Russ

There may be another method to connect via a USB audio adapter, however

some of these third-party peripherals work different, between various brands.

Your iMac may look differently on back; settings should be similar in OS.

Did you look to the Audio system preference (sound) to see if other output

choices exist there? Or maybe in another system preference. I don't use

speakers with my newest Mac; and only powered ones on vintage G4 Mac.

A standard headphone jack should be OK; you may want to see if the output

for that can be set to another level. ~ And the iMac may support newer audio

technologies via what appears to be a headphone jack. The audio port in my

Late 2012 Mac mini i7 quad-server offers options.~ I don't use them, on mute.

While I have several options in the same room here, including radio, cable, etc.
