Turn off proximity sensor on your iPhone

Since I upgraded my iPhone 7 Plus to iOS 11.3, the proximity sensor is ridiculously sensitive. For example, if the phone is sitting face up on the table and I get within 3 inches of the top half of my phone (by the camera) the screen turns off. Any thoughts on how to fix this or turn off this "feature"?

Ok I had the same, getting any object within 2 or 3 inches of the camera made it go blank, upgraded to 11.3.4 and it fixed it. However it started again a few days later.

A hard re-boot (press release up volume, pres release down volume, press & hold start button let slider come up, keep it pressed and after a few seconds the apple logo will appear, keep the button pressed until the apple logo re-appears and then release the button. After a few seconds press and release the start button) fixed it and it has not returned.

Update: turning the phone off and back on again solved things. Of course now, whether or not tracking is enabled in motion and fitness the “facedown” screen dimming doesn’t work, but I’m willing to live without it for now.

In a couple of months it may become more annoying since “facedown” is the only way to temporarily turn off Siri and I don’t want Siri on all the time, but I will need to use Siri in order to operate my phone fully hands free while driving.

Now, if only Apple and Waze were compativle for that handsfree endeavour—currently Siri stops being Apple to hear you while Waze is using the mic for handsfree operation which means you cannot receive calls or dictate anything while operating Waze.

Good luck everyone!

Hey there, this has happened to me and many customers I have seen. The fix lies in resetting all settings (settings>General>reset>reset all settings). Luckily no data will be lost but you will have to re-customize your iPhone’s settings to your specifications. Not entirely sure what triggers this issue, it’s happened to my iPhone X on several iOS versions including iOS 12 beta. Resetting all settings fixes the issue but I will say that it’s not a permanent fix, as after I’ve customized again, sometimes weeks later the proximity sensor will go mad again. I suggest getting an Apple Authorized Service Providor to replace the display if it continues as they replace the proximity sensor and all the other components near that portion during a display repair.

Same. I have a 6 or 6S. Proximity sensor “worked” when I was watching videos and using any app such the browser. If my hand or any object became too close to the earpiece, the screen went blank out. Remove the object, and the screen will turn back on. The problem went away when I turn my phone all the way off and turned it back on. I am using iOS 11.4.

There is no setting for the proximity sensor, so changes cannot be made. Feedback to Apple goes here, https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

What are you doing at the time that is turning off when the proximity sensor is turning off the screen? I can read you are "within 3 inches of the top half of the phone", but what are you doing on the phone at the time?

The proximity sensor should be disabled except when you are on a phone call. If the screen is turning off at any other time when you are not on a call there is something else wrong, and most likely it has nothing to do with the proximity sensor. It thus has nothing to do with sensitivity. If restarting the phone doesn't fix it (Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support), Try restoring iOS on your phone: Restore your iOS device from a backup - Apple Support
