How to get apple pen working with new iPad

I just bought an Apple Pencil foe nearly £100 and the new iPad 9.7 because it is supposed to support this pencil, but it does not work. I downloaded several drawing apps, and also tried it in notes and word etc but nothing. I googled but can’t find any info about it. I assumed that it would just work like my wacom styluses do. By complete chance the end fell off revealing what looks like a iPad charging plug. why would a piece of plastic with no buttons or active features have a connector? I tried pushing it into the lightning port on the bottom of the iPad but it doesn’t fit. if I use any more excessive force its going to break. surely a simple stylus can’t be Bluetooth? I went to Bluetooth setting on the iPad, but it doesn’t detect any devices. I didn’t find any obvious instructions in the box, which i left behind.

Anyone else have this problem?

This link solved the problem, but I am astounded that no instructions were supplied, in the box was only the pen. There was no charger or spare tips either. The box was sealed. Perhaps they were hidden. I took the pen out, could not see anything with it and threw the box away.

So when you get this pen, you need to spend several frustrating days googling to try to figure out how to get it to work, and, assume, like I did, that it was broken.

I would not mind but this is a £100 product, not something which comes in a jiffy bag form hongkong.

The good news is that the pen works well.
