How to dim the screen during workout

I do a lot of social dancing, and I want to count it towards my movement/exercise goals. The problem is, when I use the workout app to track it, my watch screen lights up from time to time flashing the stats, which is embarrassing given the social context. Is it possible to mute the screen while tracking the exercise, so that it would be less obvious for the people around me that I am tracking?

Hello yulia_tx,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that you would like to prevent your display from waking while using the Workout app on your Apple Watch. I would be happy to help explore some options with you.

The Apple Watch User Guide provides some additional information as to how to adjust some settings that may help:

Turn on, wake, and unlock - Apple Watch User Guide

The first option would be to turn off Wake Screen on Wrist Raise:

Wake the Apple Watch display. Just raise your wrist. Apple Watch sleeps again when you lower your wrist. You can also wake Apple Watch by tapping the display or pressing the Digital Crown. If you want to wake Apple Watch Series 2 and later by turning the Digital Crown upward, open the Apple Watch app on iPhone, tap My Watch, then tap General. Tap Wake Screen, then turn on Wake Screen on Crown Up.

You could also turn on Screen Curtain in the Accessibility options for your Apple Watch to turn the display off:

Turn off the display for privacy. Turn on the screen curtain so no one can see what’s on Apple Watch while you use VoiceOver. Open the Apple Watch app on iPhone, tap My Watch, tap the VoiceOver option in General > Accessibility, then turn on Screen Curtain.

Tip: Screen Curtain turns the display off. To turn the display on again, open the Apple Watch app in iPhone, go to General > Accessibility, tap VoiceOver, then tap Screen Curtain.

Let us know if you have questions from here.

Take care!
