MBA serial number unavailable

Upon trying to invoke the Apple Hardware Test I rapidly ended with a "NNN001" error: serial number not available. And indeed, it has disappeared completely, I do not know when it occurred, perhaps even with 10.12.

I tried blank board serializer but this also does not work. Perhaps this program is incompatible with MacOS 10.13.4 and the new APFS file system? Also reinstalling the OS did not work.

Any helpful suggestions are appreciated - but for the hint: Visit the next Apple store...

You cannot get it. As I said, it is proprietary Apple Software. You'd need to take it in to Apple and have them do it. Make a Genius Bar appointment, it only takes a minute to do. You'll want to do this because the serial number is necessary for some apps to run like FaceTime and Messages.

I am aware of this possibility. It does not, however, apply in this case - there have never been hardware replacements with this machine which I am the sole owner and user since its purchase. The serial number disappeared somewhere between 10.12 and the current OS version - I did not pay attention.

I believe that there might be a software to cure this problem - but as I said, the known blank board serializer (an old - 2007 - Apple tool) does NOT work here. The question then is: what's this software and where do I get it?
