Flickering horizontal line when I click on Reading List

Hi all,

Something strange going on with my iMac. Hard to describe.

When I click on any link on my Reading List sidebar, for a split second there is a flickering line which goes across the screen. When I say line, what I mean is, a faint copy of the link below flickers for a split second horizontally across part of the screen.

It only happens on Safari (11.1). No other app, so it must be a problem with Safari only. I have macos 10.13.4 installed. I have tried resetting Safari, resetting SMS and PRAM and even deleting the plist file from my Library folder?

A video showing the problem can be viewed here, about 2 seconds into the video......

Anybody have this and found a solution?

Thanks in advance!

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Also try the Safe Mode.

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Check Safari/View and make sure the Status Bar is turned off.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

Most posters recommend not using cleaning programs. They can destroy normal computer operations.

I would uninstall Cocktail. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.

Cocktail Uninstall See FAQ at bottom right

If you really want to try something more:

- Start in the RecoveryPartition (CMD+R),

select "install OS",

it will download a crisp (and complete) new version of OS,

and install it.

It takes some time, and it will leave your user data alone (but of course you have backups...).

After the restart the OS is again complete.

- You might not have a RecoveryPartition:

then open Appstore, log in (in the "Features" window), then find the OS FusionDrive installer in the "Purchased" window, or in the Features Window.

Download it and then start it (in the Applications folder).

- Do not put any of the "heavyweights" back in the LoginItems.

- CleanMyMac is s**t. Uninstall, it does not do anything for you but create possible issues.

Open CMM3 and look in the list, select "Uninstall", then uninstall CleanMyMac itself.

- Cocktail is also a superfluous app.

--- But I wou!d uninstall the LaCie app for certain, which could well be the culprit. The mac is quite able to handle disks and screens without the LaCie app.

- Transmission app is not safe (like any other torrent app), it is not doing anything wrong, but broadcasts your data to the folks that it goes to for the torrent download.

- TotalFinder app crashes too often, do you really need that?.

Apr 30, 2018 12:43 AM in response to Wilkyman76

OK, but anyway it is much better not to have anything in the login items, perhaps only Flycut, Popclip, and Dropbox. The rest does not have to run when doing nothing (start and stop by hand to free up ram).

Maybe it is on a low level.

Do the SMC reset, do it twice;

How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

Do the NVRAM reset;

How to reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Perhaps do the Bluetooth reset (you never know, can not hurt):

------

another question: did you ever remove languages that you don't need with CMM?

If Yes, that should never be done because a lot are "intertwined" in Macos:

I will tell you what to do to correct that.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your reply. I setted up another user account and also tried booting up in safe mode, and the flickering problem still remains.

Thanks.

Yes, I did remove languages using CMM, but this was done a long time ago. I've reset SMC and NVRAM twice but no joy.

Still trying to work out what has kicked this off suddenly........GPU? Display? Installed something I shouldn't have?

I am wondering whether I should just do a clean install and be done with it? Although it's going to be pain!!

Apr 29, 2018 10:18 PM in response to Lexiepex

Hi Lexiepex,

Thanks again.

True. I don't know if the issue is caused by CMM. I am just guessing as I've never had problems before with my iMac.

I've deleted all login items and unfortunately the issue is still there with the line coming up for about a nanosecond when I click on the reading list in Safari. The line comes up in the exact same location on my screen but only in Safari and only when I click on the reading list.

When I open a link from reading list by just clicking, the problem is recreated. When I right-click and then click "open in new tab" or "open in new window", there is never a problem.

This is really strange......
