When wearing my Apple watch my iPhone no longer notifies me of text messages

I have both the watch and phone set up to notify me with sounds and vibrations but neither seems to alert me when I get a text. I have reset both to no avail.

Any ideas?

Are you sure that the Watch is locked, or is it just that the screen is off? If you have Wrist detection on, the Watch will not lock unless you remove it from your wrist. If you tap on the watch screen, do you have to unlock it to view anything? If not, then it is not locked, it is just not displaying. If that is the case, and the iPhone is locked, your notifications will only appear on the watch. See this support document which explains how notifications work with the iPhone and Apple Watch. According to:

Read and reply to messages with your Apple Watch - Apple Support

"Apple Watch gives you a gentle tap to let you know when you have a new message. Just raise your wrist to read it and reply."

I have found this "tap" very subtle and easy to miss. I guess it is that way by design.

If you have an Apple Watch connected to your iPhone, where you see the notifications will depend on which device is locked. If your phone is locked, the notifications will come to the watch, not the phone. If the watch is locked, they will come to the phone. If both are locked, they will also appear/sound on the phone.

The only way to get notifications on both devices if the phone is locked is to turn off wrist detection in the Watch app on your phone. However, this means you won't be able to use Apple Pay from your phone and that you'll have to enter a passcode to do much more than check the time.

If you're not getting notifications either place, I'd check Settings>Do Not Disturb. And, check that you don't have your watch on mute.

Volume on iPhones is a confusing thing. Check that the volume is at an acceptable level in the Control Center. If you get really frustrated, you can try Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. But, it will take some time to put everything back to the way you want so, I don't recommend it except as a close to last resort.

Good suggestion!

Thanks. I've worked a lot at understanding the interactions between the Watch and the iPhone, since I have both. I also made a number of feedback suggestions, especially when it came to alarms, and they finally changed things. I believe the two seem to work together quite well. I know that I can mute my watch and just get vibrations during the day when I'm teaching classes, and can look down to see if it is something that requires immediate attention. It has been an excellent addition to my technology.

I read the article and that explained a lot. I went in the watch setups and disabled the "mirror phone" setting and set the Custom setting to disable any alerts on the watch. I now get the audibles on my phone again.

Thanks.

I can't read the texts on the watch anyway so I really do not need to be notified of them there. The odd thing is that it used to work until a few weeks ago and I had not changed anything?

It is working fine now, thank you.
