VPN drops when I plug in iPhone into my Mac

I work from home and am on VPN 24x7. Whenever I plug my iPhone 8 into my computer, my VPN disonnects. It does reconnect in a minute or two, but in the meantime some of my applications that require VPN connections get into a bad state and I need to re-sign in or even restart them. The wifi itself doesn't drop, only the VPN is affected.

I'm running Sierra on my Mac. What is going on?

Thanks,

Anna

Packets headed to the Internet will be sent by the TopMost, Working interface listed in:

System Preferences > Network ...

.. be certain these interfaces are listed in an order than means the sudden addition of a working of iPhone connection will not "take over" for your VPN connection.

The command to "Set Service Order" in on the gear menu under the left pane.
