IPad intercepts notifications to iPhone

My iPad takes all the notifications to my iPhone X so I never know when the phone receives messages. It even intercepts my phone calls. However, when I say 'Hey Siri' the phone answers. It's very annoying. How can I set which takes priority? I also have a Watch which wants to intercept everything too. There must be a way to tell which one should do what, when they are all in the same place.

The iPad and the iPhone (and Mac) should all get the notifications. However, if you have an Apple Watch, that's going to change things. When your phone is locked and your Apple Watch is unlocked, notifications will go to the Apple Watch, not the phone. When the Apple Watch is locked and the iPhone is unlocked, notifications will go to the iPhone. If both are locked, the notifications go to the iPhone. In all cases, they will also still go to the iPad.

The only way to get notifications on the phone and the watch when the phone is locked is to turn of Wrist Detection in the Watch app on your phone. However, you will then not be able to use Apple Pay from your watch or do much of anything with it unless you enter a passcode.

Why did you have to turn them off? Turning them off won't change what happens on the iPhone as long as you have an Apple Watch. Even if you turn the notifications off on the iPad, notifications will still go to the Apple Watch.

And when I say ‘Hey Siri‘, it is a lottery as to which thing will answer (I’ve turned it off on the Watch). It would just be nice if there was a way to set up the precedence of alerting when everything is all in the same place. I guess there isn’t.

In theory, there is.

Thank you very much for your message.

I am not particularly bothered about the interaction between the watch and the phone - in fact, I like it. The problem is rather the ’confusion’ between the phone and the iPad. If I am wearing the watch, it alerts when there is a notification and the iPad rings but the phone stays silent. If there is a call, the watch alerts and the iPad rings, but the phone stays silent. [The phone is not on ‘Do not disturb’ and volume is set to max.] I’m sure they all used to alert because I found it unnerving. I’m not even sure the phone can ring anymore because I use CarPlay in my car.

If I say ‘Hey Siri’, the phone often responds - not the iPad that I usually wanted when the two of them are side by side. Sometimes they both do though - it’s all rather random. There doesn’t seem to be a law of precedence and no way to set one. I have an iPad Pro, iPhone X and and Apple Watch 3. I have not owned an iPhone or Watch before. It is kind of unnerving how they all stick together the way they do.

Thank you very much for your reply. That makes sense.

Thanks for listening.

There is no confusion between the phone and the iPad. When you're wearing the watch, and the phone is locked, the phone will not get notifications. The watch does. So does the iPad because it's not connected to the watch. What you're describing is things working exactly as expected.
