How do I get rid of the menu FaceTime without making a call?

When opening up FaceTime, I want to set the background so that I have a good image when I make a video call. Unfortunately, Apple cuts off 1/3 of the left side of the image with the menu. How do I turn this menu “off“ when I am not ready to make a call yet?

While looking through PhotoBooth app there was a feature to set backgrounds and

another article associated with this suggested these images with set background

could be used in FaceTime. So you supply your face and separate background.

Then save to recycle in another application. Somehow. (.."save face".. LOL)

Maybe not useful as online user FaceTime in place of a Live Face on camera.

However I've not tried this; because seldom use any of these in real time and/or with

Messages. As iMessage hands off to Mac Messages, your face also answers Phone.

And I'm a little more than camera shy. Getting over that upon realization stores have

watchful cameras & recording devices. So one cannot run amok anonymously. (?)

Sorry to not be of much help. My iPad Mini 16GB has an older iOS 9.3.5 and only

mistakenly received a call in FaceTime once. ~ Image quality from built-in camera

was at best scary on the other side. Newer hardware may allow software features.
