Forwarded email gets deleted

How do I stop mail from deleting mail forward? I haven't set up any rules to do this.

It's my understanding that emails are being deleted in Mail after they are forwarded. I can definitely understand why emails being deleted on their own would be an issue. I'm happy to help you get to the bottom of this!

Is the mail forwarding set up through your iCloud email account, or was it set up through another type of email account? If it's set up through your iCloud email account and you’ve already verified there isn't a rule causing this in Mail on your Mac, you'll want to check your iCloud Mail settings on https://www.icloud.com next. This is different from the Mail rules you would set up in macOS Mail. Once you're logged into your account, follow the steps in iCloud: Automatically forward emails in iCloud to make sure the "Delete messages after forwarding" option isn't enabled:

Forward messages

  1. Click the Action pop-up menu User uploaded file in the sidebar, then choose Preferences.

  2. In the General pane, select “Forward my email to,” then type the forwarding address in the text field.

  3. If you don’t want to store a copy of each forwarded message in iCloud, select “Delete messages after forwarding.”

    Keep in mind that storing copies of forwarded messages decreases your available iCloud storage space.

  4. Click Done.



While you're in the iCloud Mail Action pop-up menu, select the Rules tab. If there are any rules set up to delete your emails, remove the rule by clicking on the little "i" next to it and then select Delete. If email forwarding was set up for an account other than iCloud, you'll need to check the email settings in webmail for that particular email account to make sure there isn't something set up on the server side that is deleting emails after they are forwarded.

If the issue remains unresolved, reply back with the answers to the following questions:
  1. Which type of email account (i.e., iCloud, Hotmail, Gmail, etc.) was mail forwarding set up through?
  2. Is this email account set up on multiple devices? If so, are the emails being deleted from each device?
  3. Are all forwarded emails being deleted, or are only some of the forwarded emails deleted?
