Upgrading a Macbook A1181 2.2 Core duo

Hi there,

I was hoping some members could give me some advice on upgrading the above Macbook model.

I believe it is a 2007 model and it runs pretty slowly now with a lot of applications no longer supported.

My question is, would it be worth upgrading it or just buying a new model? How much would it realistically cost to get it upgraded to a decent level and even then would it run smoothly or is it just too old now?

Many thanks!

I don't think it would be worth upgrading.

If this is your MacBook then the latest OS it will run is 10.7.5 which hasn't been supported for quite a while.

You could upgrade the RAM to 8GB and install an SSD but you don't know how long other components would hold out and you'd have spent money you could have put into a new Mac.

I've got that exact model myself, which was only available from Apple for about 4 months. I think it maxes out at 6 GB, although 4 GB works pretty well. An SSD would also be restricted to the 1.5 GB SATA I speeds.

The worst thing (for hardware parts) would be that Apple no longer has batteries for any of the pre-Unibody MacBook models. Any OEM battery is likely to be in bad shape unless someone managed to periodically charge it to keep it from getting to a deep discharge state.

I keep mine around and it still works perfectly even though the case is pretty beat up. But I keep it around for sentimental reasons. I wouldn't put anything into it unless it was purely as a hobby. It might be worth keeping around to do stuff that might require an optical drive, like ripping songs from CD with iTunes or watching DVDs.
