Short answer, yes. What you actually do depends on the versions you're working in, like the iMovie version. FYI, the projects and content from the current version of iOS iMovie can be opened in the current version of FCP, and from the current version of macOS iMovie can be sent to FCPX.
Why are you converting the files? FCP supports MXF files in the application. I don’t know about iMovie. Never tried.
You can’t use Compressor. The current version can do what you want, but it requires macOS 10.3.2 or later, which you can’t be using unless you have it on a different computer.
Does 5 use ProRes, or does it predate it? I can’t remember.
Thanks, Tom. I'm still using an older version of FCP that does not have native conversion. Will move to newest shortly, but have a film project I wanted to complete first, before jumping into new camera AND new software at the same time. Also, I am still in 30 day trial on the camera and wanted to try some quick adjusts in imovie, which doesn't recognize .mxf at all.
At the moment, FCP 5 and Compressor...5? It is what came with the Suite. But since I am going to upgrade to FCP X in a short while, I was thinking I would buy the most current version of Compressor now, if it did this conversion. Otherwise, I know there is 3rd party software out there that will do it. But the Canon rep suggested Compressor, and I was surprised because I didn't think it would do that. Normally I use compressor between FCP and DVD Studio Pro.
Hi Tom,
Thanks and sorry. While it is true I have FCP and Compressor on my old G5, I also have a newer, Intel-based iMac, and that is where I would use Compressor. To be honest, the only reason I am using this old G5 is for FCP. Once I upgrade, I won't need it anymore. I really love the old FCP and had been hesitant to upgrade to FCP X, since it looked like I was getting less, but I think it has evolved to where I wouldn't feel a loss.
So, yes, Compressor would be on a later system.
You’re certainly getting something very different with FCPX. It may not have some functionality you want like batch exporting and media manager, but then it has support for formats and technology that didn’t exist then.
What version of FCP are you using? What version of Compressor?
Yes. So, if I were to buy the newest version of Compressor, and use it on my later iMac, will it convert MXF for iMovie, or whatever format I need?
Many thanks!
