i sent my iPad in for a trade in with an Apple dealer and they said my FMIP is locked and to unlock it. I did but I’m confused. Please help

Carolyn thank you so much for quick reply but I don’t have that iPad connected to my Apple ID to shut it off so what do i do? See they will not accept and give me my gift card for trade in until the FMIP is unlocked! I just can’t seem to find a way :((

If activation lock is enabled, yes you do.
Activation lock is triggered by Find My iPad being enabled and that is done with an Apple ID. If it isn;t yours, it's someone else's.
