How can I find my recovery key?

i have a macbook Air that I factory reset with disc utility and erased it. I put in a recovery key I was 100% sure about. Then I tried installing a new Mac OS and it said not available now. Try again later, so I did. Then it showed this file with a question mark, I did the Command+R and it had a lock which meant he recovery key, so I put in the one I knew was right and it just erased it as if it was wrong. I’ve been trying for 2 days and need this Mac for school. Please help it is greatly appreciated and try not to use fancy words because I’m not too tech savvy.

Hi jd233,

do I understand you correctly that you reset you MacBook Air and now it asks you for a firmware password?

Your screen looks like User uploaded file and your Mac doesn't accept it?

What you can do now is:

Try to turn off firmware password

How to turn off a firmware password

  1. Start up from macOS Recovery: Press and hold Command (⌘)-R immediately after turning on your Mac, and release the keys when you see the lock icon User uploaded file and password field.
  2. Enter the firmware password.
  3. When the Utilities window appears, click Utilities in the menu bar, then choose Firmware Password Utility or Startup Security Utility.
  4. Click Turn Off Firmware Password.
  5. Enter the firmware password again when prompted.
  6. Quit the utility, then choose Apple () menu > Restart.

If you can't turn off your firmware password please schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar at your most convenient Apple Store or an appointment at your next Apple Authorized Service Provider. You will need to bring your original receipt or invoice as proof of purchase as well as your Mac.
