I lost my Apple Watch at school. Is there any way to get it back?

Alright so I left my Apple Watch at my desk for no more than 30 seconds and someone stole it. You might be thinking nobody stole it you just lost it. I check find my iPhone and the device is offline. The only way it can be offline is if it died (which it didn’t it was at 40% 10 minutes before I lost it) or it had no signal (which it should have as nobody was allowed to leave the classroom). I turned on lost mode but it just said pending because it was not connected to internet. Let’s say someone brings it home. Can they connect it to their WiFi so I can track them down? I don’t think I have a lot of options as chances are they aren’t going to bring it to school since it has an activation lock if they try to reset it. So my main question is is there any way they can connect to internet so I can track them and so lost mode gets turned on without my phone nearby / new internet connection and Activation lock?

Your only real chance is that the watch will reappear within range of your iPhone. It will Not be able to authenticate to any WiFi unless it has already connected there, so that pretty much means only the school network - again a very slim chance.

Fortunately you had Activation Lock enabled so it is useless to the thief. Maybe you should make that known within the school and offer a no questions amnesty for return of the watch. That’s no questions, and the extra reward of a free ride in a cop car or ambulance if you detect the thief without getting the watch back. Schools are small communities and there are few secrets when bragging rights with an Apple Watch are involved.
