Run walk distance off by more than 10% between Series 2 and Series 3 watch

I have seen this topic listed a couple of times, but most of the conversations are dated or stale...

Here's the deal:

My GF and I went for several walks or runs together. We are side by side the whole time. She has a series 2 watch and I have a series 3 watch. Even though we start and finish our workouts at the exact same time, we get different distances, speeds and splits. It doesn't make any sense at all. We have wiped devices and performed calibration sequences. All of our pertinent data is accurate as well. The recorded map even shows our trajectories being the same.

Here are the results from our last walk:

Distance

Series 3 - 3.45 miles

Series 2 - 3.12 miles

10% + discrepancy

Average Pace

Series 3 - 17'57"/MI

Series 2 - 19'50"MI

10%+ discrepancy

Split times (Series 3 vs Series 2)

Mile 1 - 18'56" vs 20'10"

Mile 2 18'08" vs 20'08"

Mile 3 - 17'16" vs 19'04"

Mile 4 - 17'02" vs 21'34"

I didn't even both to calclaute discrepancy because they are so far off...

The Series 3 watch also shows and elevation gain of 93', but no recording for Series 2. I know the Series 3 has a barometer in it, but I thought GPS was 3 dimensional.

Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on what's happening? Seriouls will not consider buy another Apple Watch if this is considered normal.

Thank you!!!

You have an interesting thought... I like the idea both devices could be off 5% creating a potentially larger gap. A stacking of tolerances per say... Thank you!

GPS is a pretty mature technology. Even the simplest devices have a pretty tight tolerance nowadays. I'm not looking for military precision. I have tested different devices in the past and the largest variance I have seen is less than 3%. I found it pretty disturbing to see such a variance on two devices made by the same company. I get that they are two different generations and the newer AW3 might be more accurate...

I do have an update... We again wiped everything out on both of our phones and both watches. I brought along another iphone that was not connected to my watch. I used the Runkeeper app on the phone that was not connected to my watch. This time, my watch (AW3) and the two phones I brought along were all within .08 miles of each other on a 3.65 mile walk. (2.2% variance) Additionally, my GF's watch (AW2) was off by .12 miles this time. (3.2% variance)

I cannot come up with an explanation why the results were so much better other than we did a complete wipe of the devices again and went through the calibration step at the exact same time doing the exact same path. We will continue to see if results remain this close or drift apart over time.

The only parameter you need to consider is the basic distance estimation, because everything else is derived from it. You claim a 10% error, which to my eyes could also be one watch at +5% and the other at -5%, a much more acceptable variation from neutrality and probably within the tolerance we can expect from a mass produced consumer device. Remember the tolerance for the speedometer on your car is probably also 10%...
