Apple 7 not tracking distance correctly

I have an apple watch 7. I use it for running and it isn't tracking my runs correctly. So far I have tried the following.

  • Turned all settings on that are required on the phone.
  • Made sure my height weight etc are all correct
  • Unpaired the watch and phone and set up as new
  • Had the watch replaced with another brand new 7
  • Upgraded my iPhone 8 to an iPhone 13 and paired the watch as a new watch
  • reset the fitness tracking data

As a last resort I ran with my apple watch on one arm and my old tomtom watch on the other and a friend joined me wearing their apple watch 6. At the end of the run my friends watch and my tomtom showed 5miles. My apple 7 watch showed 4.8 miles. I have contacted apple support who have told me this is considered acceptable tolerance. I am willing to accept a slight difference but this seems far to much. I have also tracked my route online and it recorded as 5miles. Anyone else having this problem or think of anything I could have possible missed?

I run full marathons and training involves very long runs. My error is 0.8mile over only 5miles. Today is was bang on for the first 1.5 miles then starting to lose distance

I wonder if, as you run and sweat, the watch starts to slip around a bit. Try tightening the band. Some have also suggested moving it about an inch or so higher on the arm while exercising.
