Hey ata70,

That's nice of you helping out a friend who is having trouble connecting their iPhone to Wi-Fi after setting up their iPhone. I can help point your friend in the right direction.

It sounds like your friend is on step 3 of setting up the device:

Activate your device

You need to connect to a Wi-Fi network, a cellular network, or iTunes to activate and continue setting up your device.

Tap the Wi-Fi network that you want to use or select a different option. If you're setting up an iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular), you might need to insert your SIM card first.

Get help if you can't connect to Wi-Fi or if you can't activate your iPhone.

This step is from Set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
As seen in that step, if your friend can't connect to Wi-Fi, try these resources for help:
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network
If you can't activate your iPhone
These steps can help your friend connect to Wi-Fi, but if your friend is still having trouble then you can bypass this and activate the device using iTunes instead:

If you still can't activate, here's how to activate your iPhone through iTunes instead:

  1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Check that your computer has an Internet connection.
  3. Open iTunes on your computer. With the cable that came with your iPhone, connect your iPhone to your computer.
  4. Wait while iTunes detects and activates your iPhone:
    • If iTunes shows, "Set up as New" or "Restore from Backup," it means that iTunes activated your iPhone.
    • If an error in iTunes says that the SIM card isn't compatible, contact your carrier.
These steps are from the same article posted above: If you can't activate your iPhone - Apple Support

Take care!
