What is system_profiler?

There is a Apple file on my Mac--system_profiler--that is using a huge amount of CPU time but I cannot find it anywhere using Spotlight or Finder Find. What is its purpose and where is it?

Mac mini, macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)

Thanks much. I'm beginning to understand what system profiler is and now realize it is an Apple product not some kind of malware. However, I still don't understand why it is using so much CPU time--anywhere from about 140% to 157%. I am using Activity Monitor in addition to EtreCheck but haven't found a solution. I ran Malwarebyte and it found four files that should be removed and I did that. But nothing changed regarding system profiler. Perhaps there is something about my system that simply requires a lot of CPU time??
