Apple watch Series 2 coating coming off

I've had the watch series 2 nike edition for about a year and a half now. Most of the time I haven't used the watch at all and only recently started wearing it daily.

After returning from the gym I always rinse it under the tap after activating the water function. This time around I noticed the coating coming off on most sharp edges- visible around the crown (looks like a new piece of the coating is starting to come off near the crown), where the straps are and even around the heart rate monitor (see under the words "alluminium & case").

I spoke to Apple support over the phone and according to them, it's because of normal wear and tear. I disagree. I look after my stuff and all the problem areas are located near or on the edges of the watch. The watch face is in perfect condition- no scratches on the glass. I've never dropped it and it's the same nike bands I bought with the watch that's on there.

The watch (without the straps) is currently in for assessment at the iStore in Cape Town. Below are pictures indicating what I am referring to:

Anybody else having the same problem? In total, I must have used the watch no more than 20 times in the past year- this should also be visible looking at how many times I charged the watch like you'd see looking at the battery health of a MacBook.
