Experiencing Slow Motion Audio

I just got my airpods 2 weeks ago, and love them so far. One peculiar thing: If I use them for a call lasting longer than a few minutes, the person I am speaking to will stop me and say "you sound like you just breathed in helium" i.e. my voice sped up, like turning up the speed on a turntable. I cannot hear this distortion. Conversely, the voice of the person I am talking to will suddenly slooow dooown, like someone turned down the speed on a turntable. They cannot hear any change in their voice from their end. It happens fairly frequently on longer calls and only lasts a few seconds.

I realize some of you reading this may have no idea what a turntable is lol. It the best way I can describe it. Another description may be using a voice disguising software to slow lower or raise the pitch, but again only for a few seconds then it returns to normal pitch.

This is not a deal breaker but could be a bit embarrassing if I am on a conference call and suddenly sound like Alvin the Chipmunk to the others on the call.

l saw someone else ask this question in September of last year, with 121 likes and a few responses, so I know I am not alone, but nothing from Apple. I presume this is a software issue with processing the signal between the phone and the earpod, and not a carrier issue. Any help with this would be appreciated.

I had the exact same problem for months but I believe I’ve finally found the fix:

-general settings

-cellular

-cellular data options

-under ‘enable LTE’, make sure it’s on ‘Data’ only and NOT ‘voice and data’

When I switched to Data only yesterday it fixed the issue completely and I had no issues after being on calls all day today. Good luck everyone!

OK, after nearly 6 months of troubleshooting this with apple support, I've come to a resolution with a senior engineer.

We replaced everything, the airpods, the phone, reloaded the phone to factory, everything. However, the final step (which should have been earlier in the process) was to reload the phone and set it up as new. Yes, this was a real pain as I had to re-download all of my apps, set up all of my alerts, accounts, etc, but after nearly two weeks this issue has gone away. In all other cases, I restored my device from a backup and the theory is that the backup was somehow corrupted causing the problem. I would say that its more likely that somewhere around the IOS 11 update, something got screwed up and this was the only way to fix it, but I wanted those who stumble across this post to know that this seemed to be the only solution that worked after 6 months and multiple support chats, phone calls, and trips to the store in which the hardware was completely replaced.

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

The key is do NOT restore your phone from a backup. Set it up as new.

Did any of you get resolution on this? I am having the hardest time getting Apple to agree that there is a bug in the 11.3+ software. This appears to have started happening after 11 came out. It only affects bluetooth connected devices (Headsets, headphones, BT connected CarPlay) and Apple really isn't taking ownership of the issue. I was told today that regardless if there are posts on the discussions, unless people actually go into the store to report it, there is no record of it and the engineering team will never address it.

SO IF YOU HAVE THIS ISSUE, GO TO THE STORE TO REPORT IT, or CALL APPLE SUPPORT to make sure a trouble ticket is logged.

This is getting ridiculous

I have experienced the same problem with my iPhone 7 since updating to 11.3 in March. When using Bluetooth (Airpods, Ford Sync, & Bose headphones) for cellular calls, there are seemingly random 5-10 second occurrences in which there is unintelligible voice distortion. It sounds like the person I'm speaking with is talking through a voice changer that makes them talk realllllllyyyyy slow. I've also noticed that when listening to music or videos on Bluetooth, the playback will randomly pause for 2-3 seconds and then resume. My brother also has an iPhone 7 and has experienced the same Bluetooth issues since updating to iOS 11.3.

I have requested help from Apple twice. At the direction of Apple, I reset my network settings which seemed to fix the problem but it returned after 5 days. Or, maybe it didn't fix the problem and the Bluetooth just happened to work fine during those 5 days...who knows. I went back to Apple and they instructed me to reset my phone and set it up as new. It sounds like other users have tried this with no success so I did not go through the hassle of setting it up as new.

Lastly, it appeared to me that Apple Watch users in particular were experiencing problems similar to mine. I have a series 2 watch which I reset but that did not help. I have unpaired the watch altogether but the Bluetooth problems persist.

I hope Apple will address this problem because I have zero confidence in my phone's Bluetooth. I have reverted to carrying my wired headphones so I can talk in the car without pulling over. Basically my Airpods, which worked fine until updating to 11.3, are useless.

I am having Thisbe exact problem. I recognized it after I started using AirPods. I tried not using them on important calls and realized it still happens when just using my phone or using car Bluetooth. I also have an Apple Watch connected through Bluetooth at all times. I had the watch for a few months before I got the AirPods and never noticed this issue till I got the AirPods. It is extremely annoying! Especially when I make calls to my **

I am experiencing a similar issue with my iPhone 7 and airpods. I've had them for a few months now and this happens about on 1 in 4 phone calls, usually when i'm on or more than 15 minutes. Before I used to hear a slow motion voice and the other caller would hear a helium voice. Now I don't hear the slow motion voice but they hear the helium. This has caused me embarrassment on calls so I am looking at having to use a new type of system. Anyone know what we can do? I have a call into the genius bar.
