FCPX 10.4.2 "not responding"

I downloaded your file, and imported it to FCP X.

Creating thumbnails took quite a bit, with FCP X using upwards of 400% CPU resources.

Trying to playback resulted in the beachball for a while, and then it was nearly impossible.

Converting the file to proxy worked quickly and playback was fine.

I don't know if it is something with HDV in general, or specific to your camera, but it is not just your mac.

I went back through 10.3.4 and 10.2.3 and even into 7.0.3. The file never worked well in any application. In FCP7 I got this warning when I imported it

The warning is surprising because it's in native HDV, which was supported in legacy FCP. I'd suggest using Compressor to convert it to ProRes 422 or generate proxy files and work with them. The application is very responsive of course in proxy mode.

High Sierra is the only OS that will run the current version of FCP.

Try capturing using the QuickTime player. You might also try testing with a new admin user.

I’m assuming there’s at least 10% drive space free on the system drive.

There may very well be a change in the OS that is conflicting with software on your machine. It's an older iMac I take it. There may be extensions that have come from older OSs that you're still carrying that have been deprecated and are causing problems. Sometimes a clean admin user can be free of these.

You can capture in the QT player by connecting the camera and using File>New Movie Recording. It will recognize the camera as an input and capture during playback.

It's still considered best practice when moving to a new operating system to do a clean wipe and install, selectively moving content from an archive rather than updating over old OSs.

By "1080i DV" tapes... do you mean HDV?

I don't have a tape camera to test anymore, but I would try Tom's advice and import using Quicktime Player.

Importing with Quicktime Player may even have the benefit of producing one single clip for a tape. FCP X would make a separate clip each time there is a break in the timecode.

You refer to the skimmer a couple of times in your video, but the skimmer isn't actually active. Can you turn on the skimmer and describe what happens when you use it in the browser?

You refer earlier to your video being on a 1 TB drive. Is this an external drive? How is connected and formatted?

I'd be really grateful to know how you get on - have had same problem since December. (HDV tapes to FCPX, iMac 2010). I've been limping along editing in proxy. I also find importing mp4 then runs perfectly smoothly.

You captured the HDV from tape, correct? Could you post a few clips somewhere that they can be downloaded and looked at?

That would be great.

The newest version will only run on High Sierra.
