Does ESPN subscription also require cable to run on AppleTV?

Just subscribed to free trial of ESPN for Apple TV. Keep being prompted to enter DirectTV credentials. Is a cable subscription required to access the ESPN app and content? (thereby defeating the purpose of cutting the cable cord!)
