No, my problem is that the reference from the thumbnail (which is correct) to the file on my mac is wrong - i.e. I have to "fix" the reference... did I make myself clear ?

Photos does not have any tools to correct this. Referenced photos are poorly supported in Photos. Frankly, it is a desaster waiting to happen. if something goes wrong, you are in for a lot of work to fix it manually.

If a photo is connected to the wrong original, you have to reimport the correct original, then copy and paste the adjustments from the wrong version to the newly imported version, copy and paste all metadata (titles, descriptions, keywords), and then delete the wrong one from the library. To copy the metadata quickly, you could use this AppleScript: Script: Lift and Stamp all Metadata from one Photo to Other Photos

which was referenced wrong?

Can you explain a bit more, please?

What do you mean by "referenced wrong"? Does the photo just show a wrong thumbnail? Then try to rotate the photo back and forth.

Select the photo. First rotate it by entering the key combination ⌘R, then rotate it back by enatering ⌥⌘R .

Now the photo should be showing the correct thumbnail

But if you mean, that you imported the photo as a referenced image, without copying it into the Photos Library, you cannot change the reference. Delete the incorrectly linked file from the library, then import the the photo you really want.

First you have to correct the wrong references - manually. I hope you still can find the correct images.

When you reimport the correct images, import them as managed. It is simply safer and less error prone.

If you cannot keep a managed Photos Library on your system drive because you do not have enogh free storage, move the library to an external drive.

You do not need to erase your current Photos Library to be able to open the iPhoto Library in Photos. But if you do not have enough storage , copy it to an externalmdrive to keep a copy, before you delete it from your system drive.

Has your original iPhoto Libray been referenced too? Then the new Photos library, that will be created from yoour iPhoto Library will be refrenced too.

After you open the iPhoto library in Photos to create a new Photos library, use the command "File > Consolidate" to copy the referenced files into the new library. This will make working with Photos a lot easier.

So I upgraded to Photos from iPhoto some 6 months ago (upgrading to yosemite) - and let's say I want to start from scratch - first question, pls focus on the 4 options on top of Photos initial window: "Photos", "shared", "Albums" and "Projects" - so to begin with I see that the 'Photos' section is a mess, dates wrong, several duplicates of same - so let's say I want to erase all pictures and videos in "photos" section, BUT.. I want to keep the "Albums" section - how do I do that?

Leoni - So there is not a way to just close your eyes and erase the entire Photos Library (except the already made albums) and just let Photos restart importing thumbnails from my entire picture & video folders? - Another questions - is it correct that the "Photos" option is an unorganized look at all the pictures and videos on my mac? - or is the "Photos" option actually configured to only create thumbnails from the folders I ask Photos for Mac to build its library from for the "Photos" option?

Ok.. all problems started upon upgrading to new Photos from iPhoto - I can see that inside the "Photos" option, several a referenced wrongly - the "Albums" are ok, as they automatically 'copied' the pictures and videos into the album library - but the "Photos" option is a big mess - so I would like to just erase every single picture and video from the "photos album and just re populate it again automatically directing the "photos" search to the specific picture and video folders on my mac - is this possible?

I have an idea - I apparently can still open the iPhoto library, using the iPhoto app (version 9.6.1) and in this app I can see that all the references are ok and working - also the albums are perfectly present - can I erase or eliminate the Photo library, then reboot mac and then open Photo, thus forcing it to create a new photo.library and hope all will be migrated perfectly?
