Hi,
Is it possible to create multiple video tracks that can be toggled on and off? I know I can drag clips above my current footage and FCPX plays whatever the top video is ~ I'm currently using this strategy to add in additional shots to my timeline however it would be nice to compare this to what's underneath with the use of an additional video track? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Try using the V key, tap it to make the toggle the video lane visible/invisvible.

ah interesting! I had never heard of auditions... this tool seems somewhat useful although many of the additional shots I'm adding in aren't necessarily the exact same time/length of the underlying clip (for instance I might overlap a previous cut in my timeline or want to cut out early and keep some of the underlying footage..)
Don’t put the audition on s connected clip. Put it in the timeline. The audition clips don’t have to be the same length. The timeline will move with the clips.
