Pop up on Safari is telling us to contact Apple Tech support immediately by calling a certain number. My husband - who is not very tech savvy - called the number and followed their directions to open a website. However, when asked to pay $$$ he figured it was a scam. How can I check if anything was actually downloaded? I had to force quit safari. When I attempted to re-open Safari, it immediately went back to that page and again, I had to force quit. Suggestions would be appreciated.

It was a SCAM. Please carefully read the following article: Phony "tech support" / "ransomware" popups and web pages Did he give the person access to your computer or provide ANY private information (phone numbers, login, bank cards, etc?) if the answer to this question is yes then your security has been compromised. If the answer is no then you count it as a lesson learned.
