Multiple Login Screens Showed on the Screen

Dear All,

After I shut down my 13-inch MacBook Pro (early 2011 model) and rebooted it again, the display sometimes went blank or showed multiple login screens horizontally. This also happened when I closed and re-opened the cover while it was on the sleep mode or being used.

I found that re-opening the cover for a couple of times sometimes helped to solve the problem, but the problem wouldn't go away for good. It came back again from time to time.

Is this a symptom of the display malfunctioning? If so, would replacing the display solve the problem in a long run?

Hey there, Joe,

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I understand that you're having some issues with the display on your MacBook Pro; specifically, you are seeing horizontal lines across the screen after it wakes from sleep or the clamshell is closed then opened. I'm happy to help!

First, try resetting the NVRAM, which (among a few other things) holds some information about your display settings: How to reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support . If the issue continues after that, try setting up and testing in a new user account. More information on how and why this can help, and how to set up an account, can be found here: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support .

After a new user account is tested, I would recommend running Disk Utility First Aid in macOS Recovery: Repair a disk using Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support .

If you still need help, please don't hesitate to respond back.

Have a great day.

If there is a possibility that the screen resolution has been set too high, you can use Safe Mode to recover from that problem (hold shift at startup).

Safe mode loads the kernel, then does a five minute Disk Repair of the Boot drive, then loads macOS with a minimal set of Apple-only extensions, not including those for graphics acceleration. You must know your userid and password to proceed, even if you normally auto-login.

Safe mode takes defaults for as many things as it can, including screen resolution. Screen refresh will be wonky and slow, but will eventually be accurate.

Any changes you make in Safe Mode will "stick" in regular mode, so if Safe Mode seems to fix your screen "rolling", be sure to make and save at least one change to the screen resolution before leaving Safe Mode.

The first Restart after a safe mode will be slightly slower, as some system caches will be rebuilt.
