Iphone losing unsent messages

I have an iphone. When I start a long text response and get interrupted with a phone call, screen lock, etc. the draft of the text message is gone. Is it saved anywhere? Is there a way to save all drafts until they are sent or deleted? I have had this on an iphone 6 and an iphone X.

Update: As you have by now surmised, when that happens, it's irretrievably gone. When you start a New iMessage or New Message via User uploaded file, the unsent New iMessage or New Message is not stored but should persist until you either User uploaded file or Cancel as long as Messages remains loaded in memory. Although it shouldn't, it does so happen that you might experience that when the screen is locked and subsequently unlocked while Messages is open to the fore, the unsent New iMessage or New Message is effectively cancelled as if you tapped Cancel. A likely work-around is to make sure Messages is in the background while any screen locks may occur.

When, instead, you start a new message from within an existent conversation, the unsent message is stored within that conversation and will persist forever until you either User uploaded file or delete it, immune from the screen lock cancellation fault.

Any questions, look at this other discussion and read all replies.

Correction: While there is no actual "save as draft" function in Messages, it does save drafted text. Unsent composition within an existent conversation will persist forever even through restarts until you either send or delete it. Unsent composition within a New Message will persist until you either send or cancel it but only for as long as Messages remains loaded in memory.
