Well, I tried restarting and re-pairing. Didn't work. Also tried putting the crown under gently running water, as suggested by Apple Support. Also didn't work. I made an appointment at the Genius Bar, waited for a Genius to show up (it was Saturday, they were busy), went through the description of my problem, filled out the forms to send it in...and was then told that it was out of warranty and would cost me more than $200 to repair it. Shame on me, I guess, for not buying AppleCare when I bought the watch LESS THAN TWO YEARS AGO. Seems like an expensive piece of hardware shouldn't stop working after less than two years. So now I can either pay another $200 to get it fixed, or spend $400 to buy a new Apple Watch. Neither is a great choice, so I might go for Option 3: Spend $20 and go back to a Timex. Shame on you, Apple. I've been a loyal fan, a proselytizer for your brand, an early adopter (that's why I have six iPods and four Macs) and a champion for everything you stand for. To say I'm let down and disappointed is an epic understatement.
