iPad Pro 12.9” not responding to touch intermittently

I bought an 12.9” iPad Pro 2017 around 6 months ago and since day one I’ve had trouble with the screen not responding to touch intermittently. It will randomly stop responding to my touch for anywhere between 1 and 30 seconds before coming back, it’s most noticeable when typing as letters or whole words will be missed which is infuriating. The home button still responds and usually gets things working again. I’ve also found that having bluetooth off stops it happening quite so often but it still happens (it’s happened a few times just typing this message out). The Apple Pencil always seems to work, it’s just finger touches that stop doing anything.

I kept hoping an update would fix the issue but nothing has changed yet. I love the iPad but this issue is unacceptable for such an expensive piece of equipment and is driving me nuts now. I’ve tried doing an erase and restore twice with no effect. I also keep the screen as clean as I can.

Im concerned about sending this in to Apple to be looked at because it’s an intermittent issue that they may not be able to replicate in the no doubt short testing they do. Has anyone else with this issue had any luck with apple support fixing it?

My iPad Pro 12.9 was spastically unresponsive to touches on the screen when I typed on the keyboard. Some times I would continually tap on one or two keys and nothing! I took off my case and no issues. I got to thinking and realized that I had the case folded up so the magnetic cover that turns the iPad on when I opened and closed it was on the back of the iPad. I decided to try turning that function off and it worked! No issues!!I turned off Lock/Unlock feature under settings/display brightness for the iPad cover and now no issues. Don’t get rid if your case or cover, just turn that feature off. Hope that helps 😉

For the record my 11 inch pro is the same. I have been using IOS 13 public beta 2 for a week and the problem has just reared its ugly head again. So we can safely say Apple are not addressing this as a problem in any current Ios or IpadOs

Solution! I had this exact problem, saw this post and got depressed thinking my I pad was broke. Turns out the Apple Pencil was causing the problem. Dropped ot one too many times I guess.

The pencil worked perfect, but my finger/ hands intermittently didn’t work. The broken pencil was tricking the pad into thinking it was touching the screen even when it was not, and when the pencil tip is touching the screen the pad wont register your hands... new pencil and my Ipad pro works good as new... hope this helps someone👍

Some case materials are better at dispersing/absorbing the heat generated from the back of the iPad.

Maybe the hard polycarbonite back of the case is too hard and not letting the heat from the back of the iPad disperse properly or is allowing the iPad to build up heat from behind and the hard plastic can't vent or disperse the heat enough.

There are a few makers of these hard polycarbonate cases with bonded TPU rubber side rails found online.

I tried two on my large iPad Pro. Hated them both.

The hard polycarbonate back was slick and slippery with no tactile grip and the very soft TPU rubber side rails were not strong and rigid enough to stand up to holding my iPad along its sides/edges without the soft rubber edge rails pulling away from the edge of the iPad.

These cases were both cheap in quality and price.

I got my money back for both.

It is not a good design and not an ideal choice for an iPad case material.

The whole point of having protective cases for iPads is to have mostly rigid protection all around. Not just the back.

Still looking for a good replacement case for my damaged Apple backcase which is still in good shape except one of the corner edges broke away.

So my 10.5“ Pro has been doing this as well. I started noticing this the last couple months. It’s intermittent and can be fixed with a reboot until whatever triggers it happens again. I do not have a pencil, so it can’t be that. I do have a case with magnet and a tempered glass screen protector. Both have been on it since it came out if the box and they never caused a problem before. I usually notice it starts while playing a game that requires quite a bit of touch activity. Once it starts acting up, various touch activities act weird For a period of time. Taps don’t register. Tap and hold (to pop up something) doesn’t work, or works as if your finger is lifting off the screen even though it isn’t. And drawing behavior gets whacky. When it gets into this state, if you just go into Notes and draw on a page you’ll see. Select a marker and color, then draw squiggly lines quickly, like you are trying to fill in the page. Parts of the line don’t register or even stranger, they draw, but then erase. Reboot and go into Notes and do the same thing and it works perfectly.

Just my gut feeling, it was introduced in a software update at some point, but it affects only certain hardware. Sounds odd, but I’ve seen problems get introduced by an OS update, but only affect a subset of devices. It doesnt seem to be a hardware component failure because the way to fix it is so predictable..just reboot.

That always fixes this problem immediately. My iPad is not warm or charging when the problem occurs. It’s like touch events are being buffered up and getting hung, overflowed etc, causing the system to not catch any events until it gets flushed out. Playing a game or typing a lot seems to be a trigger.

It happened to me also, I have been following this forum for 1 month and I had tried every solution suggested by members and unfortunately still can solved the freezing screen.

I tried to turn off “find my iPad”, it seems helped for 12 hours but the problem start again after that and when I tried to repeat the process, unfortunately doesn’t help anymore

I think Apple should seriously look into this matter and help us with a solution. I myself have been using Apple’s products for more than 12 years and always happy and satisfied with them but not this IPad Pro 10.5 which I’m really disappointed

I had this problem. I reset twice (clean) and still had the problem. I updated to the 12.1.2 beta and it still didn’t fix. Then I went through reviews of the apps I had installed and stumbled across the Blackberry Work reviews which suggest (and I suspected) that it is causing performance issues on newer (3rd gen) iPad pros (like my 12.9”). I have uninstalled and... It’s fixed. Doesn’t really help me as I needed that for work but does get the rest of my iPad flying along.

my 2017 Series 2 was doing it towards the 15 month mark. I bought the new 2018 iPad Pro on Nov 7th and it’s doing it from now. This is unacceptable for a machine that’s $2000. I am furious. Apple did a hardware test with me over Twitter yesterday and found it wasn’t a hardware issue. I reinstalled software on my other device and it stopped happening for a little while but started up again. If this keeps happening I am going to demand a refund.

OK. Another breakthrough:

I was wondering why it’s not more of a widespread or reported issue and checked with an editor for 9to5Mac. Most people I’ve asked have Wifi only models. I have Wifi & LTE. I toggle Bluetooth on and off and still got it. I also did the same with Wifi and it was still happening.

I turned off Mobile and it instantly stopped happening. Like I am literally scrolling buttery smooth without a single frame rate drop or hiccup once it’s been turned off. I turned it back on and saw that the issues started again.

***EDIT*** Issue has come back. Mine is happening mostly on Safari when loading a website like an article on smh.com.au. Because it’s happening so much, I’m confident I can replicate the issue in front of an Apple Genius.

Does everyone on here have an LTE model? Either way, Apple needs to know about this. Not good enough when the machine is 1.5 months old and costs more than a MacBook Air.

I am using smart folio cover and I hate to turn that feature off, but not going to turn on that feature for now. It feels kinda weird that this would be the cause of problem, but at least something worked for me till apple realises and fixes the problem.

Also I don’t have any issues with IPad Pro 2017 model, it’s just the new 2018 model I m having issues with and both using magnetic covers.

My iPad Pro 12.9 continues to not respond to touch screen intermittently. This happen most often when playing game Angry Birds Friends. Initially I thought was a problem when using the Apple Pencil but I think it’s an issue from a past update. I HOPE Apple can figure out this issue. Perhaps I need to take to ApplemStore to exchange if is a defective unit. Appreciate everyone’s attempts to solve problem. Thanks.

Hi All,

This is my apple replaced 12.9 wifi+cellular 2017 version already and I still am experiencing the issue.

From my experience - for my first iPad, it was mainly caused by the apple pencil, airpods or wireless keyboard. Any bluetooth connection would cause it to happen and it was really bad.

For my 2nd/apple replaced iPad, it was caused by charging or whenever a lightning cable was attached. Then later on, even without the lightning cable attached would still cause it.

To fix it, I’d always have to lock and then unlock. It would go away but just for sometime. It is such a NUISSANCE.

I have the same problem. I found my local “genius bar” was not helpful, with this, nor my iPhone 6 Plus. My wife purchased my iPad Pro last year (2018) and from the very start, I notice the touch issue. I took it apple about a month later and was told the problem was an issue that apple was working on and look forward the problem being solved in an upcoming iOS software update. Well, I’m still waiting.
