The iPhone warranty will generally not be honored outside of the country where it was purchased, with the exception that the European Union counts as one "country" for warranty purposes. Apple stores in some locations may take pity on you, but they are not required to. For India in particular, where there are only a couple of Apple factory stores, service is provided by Apple Authorized Service Providers, and they have no incentive to absorb the cost of warranty service. So don't buy a phone in the US to use in India unless you have a friend in the US you can ship it to if it needs service.

No Apple Store in India yet.

Start out here, Apple - Legal and follow through with the type of device. It is going to depend as Niel said, and the warranty is going to say that it may be restricted to the country of purchase. But for all intent and purpose, Apple does not have an international warranty on the iPhone.

It depends on the Indian repair shop; they're not obligated to honor the USA warranty, and may not be able to replace the iPhone with an unit that's functionally identical to the original, particularly if the one you have is carrier-locked.

Next time buy a phone in the country you intend to use it in.
