Wish to change tone for iMessage
I have been searching for a way to change the tone for text messages. I have the MacOX High Sierra 10.13.4. Can someone instruct me on how to do this, please?

Hi,
In Messages > Preferences > General pane you can change only the Message Received sound.
You can only choose Alert Tones as they are called. Or you can choose Ringtones
There is a folder in each group that also says Classic.
What you can't do is list the System Alert Sounds like you could in iChat or have sounds in ~/Library/Sounds that could be set for the Mac User account.
iChat and early versions of Messages had more Preferences panes and one was called Alerts
This page just happens to be iChat 4 http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/versions/ichatvers4/ichatvers4pics/Prefs/slides/iCha t4AlertsPrefs.html
There each action could be selected in the top drop down and then sounds set in the following box.
IF you set Tones in Contacts for a specific person the app will play both the global sound and the Contacts listed one.

Hi,
How you view the folder might be part of the issue.
I use Cover View myself (Like iTunes used to be when it was new)
So mine looks like this.
I have included the Finder Menu Bar and the View Menu in Drop down with the Panel that show when you use Show View Options. it of course shows Hide View Options when the panel is already on View.
The columns on view can be chosen from the list in the panel.
I use the Modified Date column, more when using the Desktop folder, to find items that are recently.
If this is done then the Name column is not sorted Alphabetically.
The little icon top right of any column can reverse the listings.
I have checked both Sierra and High Sierra and the folders are in the same places.
Hope this helps.
However without the proper permissions to access the folder and to Write to the .plist to change the named items then the exercise becomes moot.

Hi,
The .plist(s) I was thinking were there are in:
Hard Drive name/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ToneKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources as TKAlertTones and TKRingtones
The Messages App > Menu bar > Help Menu > Messages Help and search for Adding Ringtones is not that helpful either.

Thank you. I looked Hard Drive/system/library...no private frameworks or tonekit.framework. Guess I will have to be satisfied with the lousy ones that Apple gives us lol. Appreciate your help though. Have a great rest of your day.
Thank you for your reply to my question, but, I don't understand any of what you said, sorry.
Thank you. This answered my question. I guess I should have added that I wish to change it to a ringtone that I have made.
Thank you for your responses. I will look into this.
Open Message app, select 'Messages' in menubar
select 'Preferences...',
then in resulting window, make sure 'general' is selected,
select, 'Message received sound:'
Choose a sound from the menu, close the window.
HI,
Open the following drive then folders
Hard Drive name/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ToneLibrary.framework/versions/A/Resource s/AlertTones
Note the Path Bar I have displayed
You can also have a Finder window open and use the GO Menu then the Go to Folder option and paste the path listed above in the dialogue box.
This is where the Sounds for the first part of the list are saved in the .caf format
In the same Resources folder is the Ringtones folder as well.
These are saved in the .m4r format
I could not see an .plist file that shows the Tones and Ringtones that can be used.
If there is one then adding sounds to the Ringtones folder still may not show up in the list in Messages.
In Messages the Ringtones show a sub list of "Classic" items I cannot see that there is a folder for this. Something is making the Ringtones display in this way but as I said I cannot see a .plist for this.
I do have older files in my ~/Library/Sounds but I cannot drag anything into the Resources/Ringtones folder manually.
I have an Alias created of the Sounds folder and this cannot be added either.
It might be possible as the Root Super User that can be used to have more Permissions that your Mac User Account but I would have to read up on that as well.
