My screen keeps turning off when something covers the sensor

The sensor at the top of my phone is making the whole screen turn off while I am using it. If my finger goes over it or even a bit of blanket turns the screen black

Helppp it’s driving me nuts, how do I fix this.

Phone Is iPhone 7 Plus

That should be the normal behaviour of the proximity sensor, whose mission is to turn the screen black and unresponsive when you use your iphone close to your ear (avoiding accidental taps while on a call).

Then, when you remove the device from your ear, your screen should come back and return active.

Have you a case and/or a screen protector that can interfere with the proximity sensor's activity? (try to remove them)

Have you already tried a forced restart of your device?

Press and hold both the Side and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo. When it appears, release both buttons, wait for your iP7+ to restart, then test it.

If you get no help, have your device inspected at your most convenient Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider:

Apple - Find Locations - Location Selector
