Midi not recording

This is very odd.

I chose Create New Software instrument track. I then chose an Arpeggio patch from the library. I played some chords on my keyboard. I can see the midi notes being recorded, but there is no sound on playback. Further, sometimes the first chord appears in midi, but does not sound, but the second chord appears and does sound. I don't understand why this is happening?
