Finder Rename Files bug on multiple macOS

  • I select 10 files out of 100
  • renaming name and index
  • often, it renames the first file, and randomly picks other not selected files, and renames the not selected files while leaving the other 9 files selected but not renamed, very annoying.
  • It appears there are renaming bugs since El-Capitan in 2016.

The only workaround is to place files you want to rename into their own folder, and renaming all the files in that folder however, this takes many extra steps defeating renaming function.

Let's say I have 6 files selected.

What I see is that sometimes when I control-click it says "Rename 6 Items..." but as I go to choose this command it somehow loses the selection, as if I had clicked somewhere else, then it renames that selection instead.

However, if instead of the contextual menu, I go to File->Rename 6 Items... it seems to always work (at least it worked in my somewhat limited testing). This may serve as a workaround for you.
