Mail keeps asking for password

Hi,

I set up a new email account and it works fine via webmail, but when I set up the account in OS X 10.11 with Mail 9.3 it won't work. It keeps asking for the password (via the System Preferences).

I have two other mailaccounts in Mail that work fine.

So far, I tried:

  • checking ISP recommended settings for Mail 9.3 (set port to 587, use SSL, set Password authentication
  • restarting OS X
  • restarting Mail
  • resetting the password
  • set it up in a different OS X user account
  • set it up on a different Mac
  • reset the Key Chain Access app

What am I missing?

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), working with Macs since 1992

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit System Preferences.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
