sms @ phonecall on ipad.If

hi guys

i know that withe ipad itself, i can’t send sms and call someone.

And i also know aboute “forwarding” from an iphone. Now my (stupid) question is, : i have an ipad pro wifi + cellular. So there is a sim card in my ipad. If i would get an iphone(i have none) would it be possible to first put the sim card into the iphone, do all the setting to get sms into the ipad, and than put the card back into the ipad?

I am asking because i saw a youtube guy claiming that it would work. But i would just want to be sure before spendind a lot on an iphone, that can be of no more use to me( visual problem).

Thanks in advance.

If you had an iPhone, yes you’d have to pay for a service plan for that and leave it on and connected to the same wifi network you use the iPad on. You could cancel the iPad cellular data plan though and just use it with wifi, unless you need it for cellular data elsewhere. Even then, you could take both with you when away from your home wifi and connect the iPad cellularly by sharing the iPhone cellular data link over it‘s hotspot (as long as you had an iPhone plan that includes hotspot tethering).

To use iOS continuity though the iPhone and iPad do not need to be physically close to each other. They just need to both be connected to the same wifi network. So at home, either can be anywhere.

No it wont work. An ipad is not capable, at all, of connecting to any cellular service providers voice network. Cellular telephone calls and SMS/MMS texts require a cellular telephone voice channel connection.

An iPad with cellular can only connect to a carrier’s data network. iOS is what allows an iPad to share an iPhones voice channel features using an operating system component known as “continuity” - Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support

When paired to an iphone, the ipad uses the iphone to actually send and receive SMS texts. The iphone shares those over the local wifinetwork with the iPad. The iphone must be on and have an active service plan to share calls and texts with an ipad.

Hi Michael

Thank you very much for the very clear answer. I knew about the wifi tranfer between the iphone and ipad, but as said above, i once found a guy who claimed that once connected, the sim could go into the ipad.

I also figured out that the iphone should always be on, and in the neighborhood of the ipad.

TBH, the ipad pro 12.9, 2nd gen, opened a world for me, due to the amazing setting , so people with visual problems can use also tablest and so on. I’m totaly new to Apple, and i should have asked before buying one with cellular on it. I can only use it outdoors with the sim card. Only advantage of cellular. Like i said, my mistake. I tought : sim card = sms and phone calls for sore in such a flagship.

It means i would have to take one more sim card, buy an iphone, and just lay it next to the ipad. Kinda silly, but the only way i can read text messages.

Thanks again, and have a nice weekend

Rudi

Thank you very much.

That will be the way i set it up. The sim card in the ipad includes hotspot tethering). So i will put that in an iphone, and get a data- only sim card for my ipad.

i am gonna look around for a second hand iphone, because it will only serve for that purpose.

For the rest. The ipad pro is an amazing tablet. Only the fact, that i still can’t believe that Apple does not put the hardware in it, to sms and make a phonecall in the cellular models for that price. While cheap android tablets can do it, but screen size and visual settings fail.

Never the less, i am very happy with it.

Thank you again and have a very nice weekend.

Rudi
