Printing presets not saved, from Contacts (Linc Davis, are you there?)...
When printing envelopes from Contacts (or for that matter, when doing anything involving print presets) behaviour seems strange. I've experienced this on two separate machines on different LANs, and the issues appear consistent across both MacOS 10.11.6 and 10.12.6.
Requirement:
Easy envelope printing of selected group of contacts, some some with 'native' addresses, some 'international', from Contacts.app, to custom-sized envelope, in non-standard font. It appears that all print settings should be savable under a custom preset, although at no point does a 'Save' button appear, so it is unclear at what point the preset is actually saved. Does one, for example, have to actually print successfully using the preset to save it?
There are two separate problems. Specifically:
Problem 1:
We can see here (above) that everything looks good, and in fact if I click Print at this point, everything is fine. If, instead, I choose to save these fairly detailed settings as a preset (named as 'Envelope C6'), the next time I go to Print, the setting is available under the Presets popup, but when I choose it, I get this (below):
In spite of the saved preset being chosen, it's ignored my supposedly saved settings for:
- 'Print my address': should be unchecked (I've redacted my address from the preview at left)
- Print: 'Company' and 'Country' checkboxes should be checked
- Font: Should be Optima Regular 11pt as saved.
No matter what I do, this situation persists. It appears impossible to save presets which include all the detail of the individual print job – which rather defeats the object.
Problem 2: ...and furthermore, where is 'My Country'?
I'm in the UK. Clearly therefore, if I'm printing envelopes for a variety of contacts, some of whom have UK addresses and the rest being international, I will want to print the Country line from the address record on the international destinations, but not on the UK destinations, so I therefore make the settings as here:
...and as you can see, there's no 'USA' in the last line of the address in the preview pane. If I uncheck that box, though, it shows...
...which is the exact opposite of the expected behaviour.
My Mac clearly thinks it's in the USA for this context. I have Location Services on, and Maps shows a correct location. In Contacts > Prefs, I'm using a UK address format, and 'My Card' has my own address completed, with 'UK' in the country field. I can't think of anything else which could be affecting this, other than possibly careless underlying code, which has been there at least since El Cap.
I've been supporting Macs since 1989. I ought to be able to fix these things, but no good so far.
