Hi jcsterling827,

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I understand you'd like to make FaceTime audio calls, so that you don't have to be on video. I'm happy to help!

You can make both video and audio calls with FaceTime on your Mac. The following information from Make and receive FaceTime video and audio calls on Mac - Apple Support will help you learn how to make those audio calls:

Before you can make a FaceTime video or audio call, you must be signed in to FaceTime and have it turned on.

  1. In the field at the top of the FaceTime window, enter the email address or phone number of the person you want to call. If you have a card for the person in Contacts, you can just enter the name.

To see your contacts, click the Contacts button User uploaded file.

For information about adding contacts, see Create contacts while using FaceTime.

  2. To start the FaceTime call, click the Video button User uploaded file or the Audio button User uploaded file (or use the Touch Bar).

If you click the Audio button User uploaded file and you’re set up to make phone calls on your Mac, you can choose whether to make a FaceTime audio call or a phone call.

Have a wonderful day!
