Apple ipad air 2 discharge

Since about a week ago, my apple ipad air 2 has been discharging when it should be charging. i know i should let it discharge fully every month, but i cannot dot that as my ipad “plays possum” pretending to be dead when it has a near full battery. How do i stop the discharge from happening while charging i, besides getting a new battery or charger?
