Does your system run in the background while you are logged out of your account?

After I upgraded to High Sierra, I was logged out of my account after the sleep or screen saver began. This happened while I was running “First Aid” on the hard drive in the Disk Utility and even during an upgrade. Does it mean, it stopped running until I logged in again?

Will anything that is running at the time stop until you log in again, or will it continue running in the background while you are logged out?

I hope this is not too confusing.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)

Depends in part on your enabled settings in Energy Saver preferences. Here is what you should enable given your post:

In my Energy Saver preferences, I don't see the option "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off".

Maybe I should set "turn display off" to "never" when running something important that may take a long time to complete?

Are you sure you don't see this checkbox?

This screenshot is for an iMac. MacBooks and MacBook Pros have a different window and that's possible what Kappy is displaying.

Yes, I see this option but how can I run an upgrade or anything else important if I put the hard disk to sleep?
