Does your system run in the background while you are logged out of your account?

After I upgraded to High Sierra, I was logged out of my account after the sleep or screen saver began. This happened while I was running “First Aid” on the hard drive in the Disk Utility and even during an upgrade. Does it mean, it stopped running until I logged in again?


Will anything that is running at the time stop until you log in again, or will it continue running in the background while you are logged out?


I hope this is not too confusing.

Depends in part on your enabled settings in Energy Saver preferences. Here is what you should enable given your post:
