Deleted photos but hard drive still full

ive deleted pictures from Photos to free up space, the pictures have disappeared from Photos but the hard drive used capacity has stayed the same. They are not in the trash so I have no idea where they are. I want to delete them as I’ve already backed up to an EHD, I only have a few Gb left on the hard drive.

VIN, MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), macOS Sierra (10.12.5), Core 2 duo 8gb Macbook Pro

When you properly delete a photo in Photos it moves ot the recently deleted album for 30 days or until you earlier delete it from there - what is in your recently deleted album?
